Ages 2-99: (One Reason) Why the iPad Will Win!

Note: This is not a review of the iPad. If you want a features list or more information about the device, click here. Also, I apologize for the photo, if you find it creepy.

Since its early April release, the iPad has been making a lot of noise, and understandably so. Several hundred thousand devices were sold on the first day the iPad was available for purchase, and hundreds of thousands have been sold since then. There have been many claims – articles & videos – as to why the iPad is so great. However, two videos stand out in my mind as proof as to why the iPad is such a phenomenal product.

The first video (~ 900,000 views) shows a 2 1/2 year-old girl experiencing the iPad for the first time. From the video’s description, “My daughter likes playing with my iPhone, but this was her very first encounter with an iPad. As you’ll see, she took right to it… although she too wonders why it doesn’t have a camera!” Pretty amazing to see a young child utilizing a brand new piece of technology so effortlessly!

This March, PC World went so far as to call the iPad the ‘Children’s Toy of the Year.’ Just take a look at the iPad app store. There are tons of applications – games, interactive books (sidenote: the book industry is about to be revolutionized), drawing & coloring apps – geared directly to kids! Imagine as a child, being able to read one of your favorite books, but instead of just reading, having the chance to interact with the characters, or watch a video, or listen to sound effects as you read along.

The second video (~ 450,000 views) is of a woman nearly a century old, experimenting with the first computer she ever bought, the iPad. Because of failing vision, she had a hard time reading and writing. However, that all changed with the iPad.

For older people, the iPad provides a lot of amazing features. First, it makes reading and typing a much easier process. If the text is too small, simply make it bigger! If a traditional keyboard is too cluttered, the iPad’s larger touch keyboard is perfect. Also, new technology can be a scary thing for people who didn’t grow up with it in their lives. The iPad provides an intuitive user experience for novice computer users, opening up a whole new world to them in the process.

For me, these videos explain a lot about what makes the iPad so phenomenal. Two people at the opposite extremes of life, both with little-to-no experience with computers, were able to utilize the iPad with ease, and for completely different purposes.

I know that using these videos may make it seem like I am generalizing. I do not assume that every 2 year-old and every 99 year-old would find the iPad easy to use, but I think the videos show how useful a device the iPad really can be. It’s hard to find any product that can be utilized so effortlessly by such a wide range of ages. Even a TV, one could argue, is harder to navigate.

What do you think? Have you had experience with the iPad? What are your thoughts on the device as compared to other Apple releases? For you, is it a revolutionary product, or “just a big iPod Touch?”

Sam may be a graduate of the University of Southern California in sunny LA, but he is a native Philadelphian. At the age of five, Sam witnessed Joe Carter hit a three-run walk-off home run against closer Mitch Williams, propelling the Toronto Blue Jays into a World Series victory over his hometown Phillies. It was from that awful and agonizing moment forward, that sports took over little Sam’s life. Now, as a project manager at VaynerMedia, he is thrilled to be able to combine his passions for sports and social media on a daily basis, and he will never, ever forgive Joe Carter.

Great post! At first I thought the iPad was an joke and some sort of SNL skit. But now that I seen the possibilities with it I'm excited to get one once the 3G model comes out. My toddlers both love the apps on my iPhone and use them regularly. This changes the game completely!

Scott, thanks for the comment. The iPad truly is a game-changer! The iPhone is great for kids to play with, but the iPad takes it to an entirely different level. Let's not forget the benefits for adults, as well! ;)

My guess is the IPAD will be revolutionary product, it will engender more customer interaction capabilities than the other apple products.

  • gosam

Anthony, appreciate your comment. I agree with you completely. The product was released less than a month ago, and already we are seeing some very innovative uses. Looking forward to what's to come!

    Me 2, thanks.

I'm with you, Sam. I feel that this thing is going to be a real winner – and that was before I saw these two videos. I couldn't help but watch the 2 year old's video mesmerized by how well she navigated through it. The old lady made me smile, but for a different reason. The one thing I find remarkable is how she can deal with reading the LCD screen with those century old eyes :)

Once platforms like Google Adwords and Google Analytics (where I spend a good part of my day) become fully integrated, I really look forward to having this device in meetings. I expect it to add a lot to the interaction between myself, the client, and my presentation and/or data.

Chris, appreciate the comment and happy to see you enjoyed the videos. The point really was, if a two year old can find the iPad useful, and a 99 year old can find the iPad useful, then we can _all_ find a great use for the iPad ourselves! I haven't purchased one myself, but I've had several hours with the device and I'm in love. Definitely going to buy one at some point soon!

Liked your post. You definitely convinced me it has value for specific tasks/people. I can totally see myself owning one now; when it came out, I'd pretty much dismissed it as a paperweight.

I still think the iPhone OS is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it provides a comfortable, fluid, touch-oriented UI, but on the other hand, it prevents you from using apps Apple doesn't approve of, including Flash. I don't miss Flash on my phone, but on an iPad, it just makes no sense to skip (especially if you subscribe to the iPad as laptop-replacement school of thought.) Google Analytics, for instance, uses Flash for nearly all of its graphics.

Judd, thanks for commenting! Fantastic point about the iPhone OS, especially in the sense that without Flash, the iPad can't truly be a laptop replacement. However, I don't think the iPad should be a replacement to your laptop, it's simply a nice accompaniment, in my opinion. Rather than taking your laptop home from work, or to a nearby meeting, simply bring your iPad! Want to catch up on a bit of email and enjoy the sunny weather outside? iPad seems like a perfect fit for that. Just think there are certain situations when the iPad is better/easier to use.

I would agree with you 100% if the iPad was priced for that sort of thing. At $499, it's priced higher than some netbooks. Take the Dell Inspiron Mini – same screen size, comparable speed, comparable battery life, plus a big hard drive, keyboard, and full OS (Win7), so it runs Flash, naturally – and it's a solid $200 cheaper than the iPad.

Obviously the iPad is superior in terms of simplicity and approachability – those vids of small children and the elderly prove that. And if the iPad was priced at $350 or so, I'd call it a great buy (googling it shows it has an estimated manufacturing cost of about $270.) It'll be interesting to see if Apple drops the price once demand starts to slow.

  • gosam

Good point! I'd assume that Apple will drop the price as demand slows (not anytime soon – 1 million sold in 28 days!) down to that $350-399 price point. As with any brand new product (especially Apple product), it's going to be overpriced so they can make the most bang for their buck with the early adopter crowd who will pay anything.
