Gary Vaynerchuk has captured attention with his pioneering, multi-faceted approach to personal branding and business. After primarily utilizing traditional advertising techniques to build his family’s local retail wine business into a national industry leader, Gary rapidly leveraged social media tools such as Twitter and Facebook to promote Wine Library TV, his video blog about wine. Gary’s success has led to a 7-figure book deal, several national TV appearances, and a flurry of speaking engagements around the world. Gary’s dual identity as both business guru and wine guy has made him the “Social Media Sommelier.”

    BUZZ!

I can’t wait to hear your thoughts after you try Google Buzz. I agree with the name; if Sergey’s team can come up with the name “Google”, they should have certainly come up with something more original than Buzz…

Buzz is blah. It’s like friendfeed stopped using steroids.

Confusing name to me, too, bc I often think about buzz as a marketing term – WOM.

Hilarious ‘don’t be mean’ at the end of this. You’ve got a future in Hollywood with your timing/delivery.

I think buzz could be interesting. I’ve used friend feed in the past and it was alright. Could have used a bit of polishing. We’ll see if it catches on here in the US unlike orkut. They have some hurdles in the form of twitter and facebook, but I think if they work with them it could be beautiful! :)

I love the end line dont be mean…

Its funny you say that about yahoo buzz… I accidentally found out about yahoo buzz today on my way to google buzz. I agree with you that the naming seems a little underhanded, however I dont think yahoo will need to rebrand.

Its hard to say with a product this young what will happen… Its too new and shockingly the how to video is really vague. My gut tells me that Google is thinking more about face book than yahoo… (Posted a link up top as to why).

Really appreciate and respect what you do…good catch

    Thanks

Mike, that’s a really interesting point regarding you finding out about yahoo buzz via the google buzz news. If you actually google “buzz” yahoo buzz is the 1st result. Interesting.

Are you really commenting on something you haven’t looked at yet Gary?

I am commenting on the “play” by Google, not the product

It was kind of bullying, but I thought they were more disrespectful to Yahoo in the first few minutes of their presentation. In their timeline of how the web and social media got to this point they said something to the effect of “a couple YAHOOS thought the web should be set up in a directory” and then pretty much said until we came along and changed the world.

My other thought is why do I need this with Facebook and Twitter around? I can see them partnering or buying out Twitter, but do they really think 400+ million people will stop using Facebook just because they are Google?

I really want to comment on Buzz, (haven’t been able to stop playing with it on my phone for the last hour)…But since this post isn’t about Buzz necessarily, I will wait.
Good call on the name thing, I didn’t even think about it!

Google is #1….at least that’s how I feel.

I’m seeing a lot of other brands trying to reinvent the wheel with this whole status update thing, and I think it’s a waste of time. If you’d like to offer status updates to your users, you should be integrating Twitter and Facebook into your site; no user wants to update their status each time they log into a different site. I’d rather see my tweets go into my Gmail status than have to type the same thing on Twitter and on Gmail.

You know what? The name isn’t that great and, to your point, that is awful “suspect.” I guess that’s what happens when business dollars are more important than individual thinking, creativity and focus. Rather than chasing their own ideas and creating their own independent brand they’re stealing from their competition. Sounds like something a company who’s trying to make their investors happy may do rather than a company standing by their own ideas. Maybe that’s me.

Regardless, I’ll give it a try and get my brand on it early. If it takes off, I want to be on the bleeding edge of its rise. If it fails, what does it really cost me? A bit of my time? Oh well.
