Thanks for your comment. I can't possibly agree more. Apparently the change *is* happening – but its vague launch date really is bewildering, as you said. Also, I have no idea what will happen with that extra space, or what will happen to the existing tabs. Maybe extra ad space? Just to be super safe, we're designing everything in 520px.

Is this actually happening?

I keep hearing about this 'early 2010' move and am increasingly aggravated by the lack of information that FB have supplied devs, outside of a vague roadmap with no real update schedule in place.

520px works great for some things but it's a huge pain for other designs and will require extensive overhauls to ensure the fludity and clarity of the apps remain the same.. What's more, i gather the canvas size is remaining the same, the app inside of a tab will be 520px and the app when viewed through the apps.facebook.com address, will remain at the original 760px size?! and we still have no idea as to how existing apps will be navigated within this space? will they scroll, will they simply lopp off content? what is this new space being used for?

The lack of information from the source here is very bewildering..

Anything new on this? I had thought that the dimension change was right around the corner. I’ve got several pages I’m updating, and I’ve set them all to 520 – looks a little strange when the page is still 760! Trying not to have to go back and forth with this width issue, and having to re-re-design my fan pages again.

Wow, thanks for sharing this story. It sucks. But I think we (designers) can learn from this. I think moving forward, as brands become more in demand of this type of work (i.e. custom facebook, twitter pages, etc.)…we should include clauses in the contract that states if the third-party changes their interface or adjust things, that additional charges will be applied. I think if both parties understand this going in, it’s all understandable. Even if the client doesn’t go for it, you can still work out a deal like maybe they’ll be charged half of your normal hourly rate, etc. Everything’s negotiable. – Thanks for showing the PSD. The Gary Vaynerchuk fb page is sick. Really love that. Very creative.

Great overview and insight to your design process. I like the advice at the end talking about including these kinds of unforeseen design changes in some sort of monthly retainer.

Gene, thanks for your comment. We wanted to offer this restructuring free of charge as an added value to our clients, especially as a younger company. The story might have been different if we had to revisit more time-intensive rich media applications – but since *most* were built in static HTML, it was fairly easier to resize images and restructure layouts.

Hi Sam! Glad to hear you could find this helpful. I have to agree with you about boxes. I always ended up turning them off anyway.

Unfortunately “early ‘09, late ‘10″ is about all the information we have. If I were a gambling man, which I’m not, I’d say they’d roll out with these changes over the next few weeks. But you really never know!!!

Oh man, you have got to charge your clients for work like this. We run into this all the time when a new browser comes out. There’s no way a client should get the changes you have to make to accommodate IE9 or on the iPad when it comes out for free.
